Drywall/Sheetrock FAQs

How do you quote a drywall job? Based on the potential total square footage of drywall used, a drywall contractor should charge $1.50 to $3 a square foot to hang and finish drywall. Which individual pricing between $1.50 and $3 a contractor chooses depends on the level of job difficulty and professional experience.

How to fix a ceiling? Cut a rectangle around the damaged area. Add wooden cleats behind each side for support. Attach a patch piece to the cleats. Place mesh tape over the patch piece and spread joint compound. Apply a second and third coat of the compound over repairs and then sand until smooth. More items...

Are sheetrock and drywall the same? Sheetrock is easily explained. Sheetrock is actually one brand of drywall, and it's made by the U.S. Gypsum Company (USG). It was created in the early 1900s, so it's become synonymous with the word drywall. Drywall is also called wallboard, gypsum board or plasterboard.

What is the rule of thumb for drywall estimating? Calculate how many drywall sheets you will need by dividing the total square footage of area by 32 (if you're using 4-by-8 sheets) or by 48 (if you're using 4-by-12 sheets). If you want to get the cost, just multiply the total number of sheets by the price per sheet. Remember to add local taxes and delivery charges.

What sheetrock goes on ceilings? When installed on ceilings, 5/8-inch-thick panels are less susceptible to sagging between the joists than 1/2-inch panels. Adding popcorn texture or another type of heavy surfacing material can add to the weight problem, making 5/8-inch drywall a better choice for ceilings.

Is sheetrock hard to install? Even though you can get help from an expert, hanging drywall is simple enough to do yourself. It's an inexpensive material to work with, and if you make a mistake, you can quickly fix it. To do the job right, you're going to need some tools and materials besides the drywall itself.

Is it better to hang drywall vertically or horizontally? Easier to finish – A horizontal seam 48 inches or 54 inches off the floor is easier to finish uniformly, especially when compared to a vertical seam, which requires reaching up high and bending down low to finish. Also, don't forget that drywall is available in long lengths so most walls can be covered in one length.
